Periodontal Therapy

It’s estimated that around 80% of the population will experience some form of gum disease during their life. Gum disease or periodontal disease, is the result of an infection, which has spread to the gums and tooth roots. If left untreated it can affect your oral health and bone structure, and even lead to tooth loss.

Periodontal disease is the next step along from gingivitis, which is the infection of the gums by bacteria resulting from poor oral hygiene.

Periodontal disease can is a progressive condition and increases in severity the longer it is left untreated. The treatment of the disease will require different levels of care. If you are experiencing gum disease, Dr Kader will consult with you about the best course of treatment and the estimated time frame to restore your optimum oral health.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the mildest form of gum disease and the precursor to more complex problems. It is the inflammation of the gums and can include bleeding when brushing and flossing.

The ill-effects of gingivitis can be reversed with the use of periodontal treatment and a good oral hygiene routine, but it is always best to visit Brite Dental for diagnosis and treatment advice.

Periodontitis

Once gum disease has progressed from the gingivitis stage, it then is known as periodontitis. This type of gum disease comes in varied degrees; the most common cause of gum disease is plaque.

The bacteria that causes plaque attacks the gum tissue and tooth enamel, causing both gum disease and tooth decay. To prevent plaque from leading to gum disease, it is a good idea to maintain an effective oral hygiene routine. This should include brushing, flossing and using mouthwash.

Monitoring the health of your gums and visiting the Brite Dental team for checkups every six months can be the difference between needing moderate treatment or gum surgery.

Signs and symptoms you should look out for include:

  • Bleeding gums when you floss or brush your teeth
  • Swollen and tender gums
  • Receding gum line that makes the teeth look longer
  • Pus between the teeth
  • Mouth sores
  • Continual bad breath

If you experience any of these you should immediately schedule a hygiene appointment with the Brite Dental team.
